Post Ratings - Need a Few Good Men!
« on: September 23, 2009, 11:09:33 AM »
Ok, am working on a new mod called, Post Ratings, for those of you who don't know.  Well, I am in the Admin Settings, and I'm having trouble naming the images.  Currently I have Empty URL and Full URL, but this doesn't make sense to me, but can't think of anything else for it.  Need a very general approach, like what I have for the text section just underneath of it, but I'm at a lost for words.  Hoping that someone here will be able to lend a hand with what to call it besides Empty URL and Full URL.  Well, here's a pic for you so you can see what I'm talking about (it's under the Image Ratings section)...

Thanks!  And don't worry, the Admin Settings not finished yet, gotta add some help question marks next to each header so as to explain each section in there.

More Info.
As the user can select any image for this, Empty and Full is not the best choice of words.  However, this will be dynamic so that when the user mouses over the Empty URL (currently named in pic), it will change to the Full URL (currently named in pic).  So hopefully you get the idea.  But changes will not take effect in full until user clicks on that Full URL image.  Basically, this is how the Downloads System Ratings work, so will work the same way.

Well, let me know your opinions, ideas, etc..

Thanks Again :)

duhhh, thanks Shortie, feeling a bit stupid here, lol.

Just out of curiousity, at current, people can use any url to display the image.  Should I do this?  Or should I just make it forum specific?  That is relative to their SMF Root directory.

Well, let me know what you guys think, k?

Cheers :)

Ok, here's what I have now...

Thanks Shortie, sometimes I just can't think of the words...lol :)

Do you think there should be any other settings in here??  Please note haven't added Permissions yet, but permissions will be added and will be able to set board permissions for enabled/disabled also.  Just wondering if you guys think any other settings should be added to the normal Admin Settings for Post Ratings other than what is already there.

Cheers :)

Okay with my security head on

Keep it forum specific that way and  admin has more control - I know you can link to an external site but I still say make if site specific

Ohhhhhh Just had a thought can you make it domain specific so if people have a wordpress installation they can link between the two just a thought and as always I do move the goal posts :D:D

Yeah, I can make it domain specific, which was my original intention.  But was thinking along the lines of a post_ratings folder and it can just grab all of the images in there and have the user select them from a drop down.  So if the user wanted to add more images to the drop down selection of choices, they just place the images within the post_ratings folder which will be at:  ./Themes/default/images filepath.

Anyways, just another idea.

Ok, I'm at the Permissions stage now and require more help on naming of a permission....arggg...

Ok, so you know when you create a new topic and their is the Additional Options... link and in there you will see Lock this topic, Sticky this topic, Move this topic.  Well this is very similar in that it will only be allowed during topic creation and will say something like, Allow topic to be rated.  If own is selected, user has the ability to do this when creating their own topics.  If any is selected, (mainly for Admins, Global Mods) user can either check this or uncheck it when modifying another persons created topic.

So now you know what this is, can someone please help me name this in Permissions, as it is currently in the pic attached (in Simple view of Regular Permissions), says:  Allow Post Ratings (Own Topic), and Allow Post Ratings (Any Topic).  Does this make sense??  I think it may confuse people into something different as it is talking about Allowing posts to be rated and could be confused with allowing the topic creator to rate his own post, or any post, which is not what this means at all.  These permissions only give this user the ability to allow his own topic, with any replies (posts) to be rated by everyone.

Well pic is attached here.  I am in need of a better Short phrase for this so it isn't confusing at all.  Please someone help?  Thanks!

Ok, basically, I need both of these phrases shortened somehow to about 3 - 4 words max:

1. Allow user to select if posts are to be rated for their own topic

2. Allow user to select if posts are to be rated for anyone's topic

Thanks guys

Ok, not bad Shortie, but as no one was replying and I was still coding, just couldn't settle for what I had so changed it to Enable Post Ratings, so it looks like this now...

Post Ratings Permissions

I think I'll leave it at Enable Post Ratings, kinda makes the most sense to me now.

Cheers :)

P.S. -> The cool thing about the Board Profile Permissions is that you can have a different set of Board Permissions for each board.  So Post Ratings can act differently on different boards, which is going to be a lot of FUN!!!

Also, I have found a better way to add permissions to SMF while looking over their permission arrays a bit.  Will be updating my other mods with this change also.  So, all good stuff.

Ok, I'm in need of some help here as I have this text at the bottom of each post that has Post Ratings Enabled, that will now make it so that the option for you to rate it is hidden by default and when you click it, it displays your rating options.  This is a setting in the Post Rating Admin panel for this to enable this or disable it.

But I am in need of some help here as I'm not really sure text is the best way it will look.  Any ideas on this guys/gals??

IMPORTANT:  Please bear in mind that the ENABLED STAR ICON and DELETE STAR ICON on the upper right of all images inside of each post, as well as the Disable Rating link in the lower left-hand side of the images inside the topic, are only visible to those that have the permission to enable/disable/delete ratings in posts and/or topics.

Ok, currently if you are able to rate a post and you haven't rated the post yet, this is what you will see (Please ignore the top of the post as this hasn't been coded fully, your focus should be on the bottom area of the post in these pictures):

Fig. 1.1

Now when you click on the Rate this post... text, this is what you see:

Fig. 1.2

Clicking on the Close Post Rating Options brings you back to Fig. 1.1.
Now, let's say you had already rated this post, this is what you see:

Fig.1.3

And than if you click on the Post Rating Options text, this is what you will see, clicking on any of the stars will change your rating:

Fig.1.4

Clicking on the Close Post Rating Options text will take you back to Fig. 1.3

Ok, here's where I need the help.  I can do anything in here, so not really sure if the text is the best choice for this.  Does anyone have any ideas on what to display for this when clicking for both expand and collapsed???  How to display it??  Or anything at all, as what I have now is kinda basic and want something really cool and dynamic, just having trouble thinking of something...

Well, hopefully we can come up with some cool ideas for this, perhaps an image of some sort to depict that the user can rate/edit their rating/delete their rating for that particular post.

EDIT:  If you'd like to see this in real life examples and test for yourself, you can go to the TEST SITE HERE, however, before you will have any options to rate posts, you will have to register as a member and be logged in.  I believe guest have the permission to view ratings only (which hasn't been fully coded yet).

Ok, I think I'm going to go with the expand.gif and collapse.gif images that SMF already uses, so now it looks like this:

Any objections, or any other ideas, please feel free to speak up.

I think terrible and bad should be removed as they seem a bit to harsh and critical to me you know sometimes if you can't say something nice don't say anything at all . Just Nerdboy trying to be diplomatic . :D:D
