    Okay just done it for ya so just play until you get it as you want

    Find in display.template.php

    Code: [Select]
    // Show the page index... "Pages: [1]".
    echo '

    ', $txt['pages'], ': ', $context['page_index'], !empty($modSettings['topbottomEnable']) ? $context['menu_separator'] . '   ' . $txt['go_down'] . '' : '', '

    ';

    Replace

    Code: [Select]
    // Show the page index... "Pages: [1]".
    echo '

    ', $txt['pages'], ': ', $context['page_index'], !empty($modSettings['topbottomEnable']) ? $context['menu_separator'] . '   ' . $txt['go_down'] . '' : '', '

    ';

    and find

    Code: [Select]
    echo '

    ', $txt['pages'], ': ', $context['page_index'], !empty($modSettings['topbottomEnable']) ? $context['menu_separator'] . '   ' . $txt['go_up'] . '' : '', '

    ', $context['previous_next'], '

    ';

    and replace with

    Code: [Select]
    echo '

    ', $txt['pages'], ': ', $context['page_index'], !empty($modSettings['topbottomEnable']) ? $context['menu_separator'] . '   ' . $txt['go_up'] . '' : '', '

    ';

    give it a try

    Shortie

    Oh and as always backup first :D:D

    Hey Shortie,

    Question - will the Prev/next apply to the posts in a topic or the topics in a category? I was looking for posts in a topic.

      Hi Ya

      It Applies to posts in a topic - from what I can see there is no function for doing Prev / Next in a Board with a large number of topics

      So at a guess it is what you are after - try it and if it is not what you want then over write the file with the backup you will make before you start :D:D:D

      If that makes sense

      Shortie

            Yah, eating crow sux ;D

            The edit worked fine. Don't want to be a nit but can the prev/next be moved between the pages and the go up/down instead of on the extreme left?

            Thx, +EV

                      Sure, would love to Jump In, just attach all files related to what you are doing there plusev, k?  And file edits that you have done, please point me to the LINE #'s.  That way I don't have to waste time finding it myself and can focus primarily on what you want accomplished.

                      Thanks :)

                        The exact code is above as supplied by Shortie. Did the edits and it's functioning fine. Currently the Prev/Next text links browse the topics. What I was looking for was for the Prev/Next links to browse the pages within a topic.

                          Ok, gotcha, so you want the Prev Next links to browse through the current topic pages, instead of going to the next topic in that board.  So, if there are no more pages, than I suppose the Next link should be just text, not a link.  And if you are already on page 1, the Prev link should be text and not a link also.  And if there is only 1 page for that topic, both Prev & Next links should only be text, not links.  Will work an edit out for this, be back shortly.

                            Hi All

                            At a guess the best bet would be to find the existing code and just mod it for posts instead of topics

                            But you are the PHP Perfectionist so do what is best

                            As for page one and the last page could just turn the link off may be easier

                              Yep, has to be modded, and code has to be changed in Display.php and Display.template.php files.  Working on it right now, but don't know if I'll get the chance to finish since I'm currently a bit busy around the house...

                              We'll see...

                                FOR SMF 2.0.x Versions:
                                Ok, in ./Sources/Display.php @ around LINE #549...

                                FIND:
                                Code: [Select]
                                // Construct the page index, allowing for the .START method...
                                $context['page_index'] = constructPageIndex($scripturl . '?topic=' . $topic . '.%d', $_REQUEST['start'], $context['total_visible_posts'], $context['messages_per_page'], true);
                                $context['start'] = $_REQUEST['start'];

                                AFTER, ADD:
                                Code: [Select]

                                if ($context['total_visible_posts'] <= ($context['start'] + $context['messages_per_page']))
                                $context['next_topic_page'] = ' Next>>';
                                else

                                Now in ./Themes/default/Display.template.php

                                FIND @ around LINE 131 (or whereever you have it defined, since I believe you changed this already):

                                There ya go, 2 Edits.  Anyways, never even changed the $context['previous_next'] variable.  So, if you want you can still use this variable wherever.

                                    Just occurred to me that there is 1 other edit in Display.template.php (this is the footer, as the << Prev Next >> Links get displayed twice, once at the top and again at the bottom.  Didn't catch the 1 at the bottom until just now...

                                    ./Themes/default/Display.template.php

                                    FIND (@ around LINE #523)
                                    Code: [Select]
                                    ', $context['previous_next'], '

                                    REPLACE WITH:
                                    Code: [Select]
                                    ', $context['prev_topic_page'], $context['next_topic_page'], '

                                    And if you don't want to show the << Prev and/or Next >> text when there isn't a Previous Page and/or Next Page to go to:

                                    For the Previous Code I posted for ./Sources/Display.php

                                    REPLACE ENTIRE CODE WITH:
                                    Code: [Select]

                                    if (empty($context['start']))
                                    $context['prev_topic_page'] = '';
                                    else
                                    $context['prev_topic_page'] = '<< Previous';

                                    if ($context['total_visible_posts'] <= ($context['start'] + $context['messages_per_page']))
                                    $context['next_topic_page'] = '';
                                    else
                                    $context['next_topic_page'] = ' Next >>';

                                    Well, that takes care of that for sure.

                                      I couldn't find
                                      ', $context['previous_next'], '

                                      Also, now the right side prev/next is rotating the topic post pages but the left side prev/next is still rotating the topics themselves.

                                      It would probably be helpful to have prev topic/next topic text links on the right side to eliminate confusion. The left side is self explanatory.

                                      Thx

                                        Just do a search for $context['previous_next'] instead and you will find where it needs to be changed.  As all of these variable definitions will need to be changed

                                        FROM
                                        Code: [Select]
                                        $context['previous_next']
                                        TO
                                        Code: [Select]
                                        $context['prev_topic_page'], $context['next_topic_page']

                                        Be sure to add
                                        Code: [Select]
                                        class="smalltext" in the DIV TAG that is calling the variable.

                                        If you want, you can zip up your Display.template.php file and upload it in here, so I can take a look at it and do the edits for you?

                                            Class="smalltext" is a css tag which can be called from any where it just means that the txt size is consistent across the site

                                              Here you go.  All fine now as I believe you want the << Previous Next >> link on the left next to the page 1 [2] 3... etc.

                                              Let me know if you still want the << Previous Next >> links that go to the next topic on the right.  Since I removed that code, but can put it back in for the top right.

                                                If you can put back the prev/next for the topics on the bottom (probably more important than the top) and top and maybe make the text read Previous topic / Next topic - that would be perfection. Thx

                                                  Previous Topic and Next Topic text will need to be done in Display.php found in your Sources directory.  So you'll want to upload this file also.

                                                    Here is the Display.template.php file ==> [ATTACHMENT DELETED]

                                                    Put it on the top and the bottom.  If you upload your Display.php file in your Sources directory I'll change this too.

                                                    If you ask me, I think it would be better to have images for going to the Previous/Next Topic page intead of the text.  For example an Arrow Image.  And the Prev arrow image should be just before the "1" in Pages: 1, and the next arrow image should be after the last page #, like this:

                                                    Pages: << 1 [2] 3 4 >>

                                                    But in order to make it look like this will need to have your Display.php file and may need other files also, but not sure on this yet.  So if this is what you want, let me know, k?

                                                      I agree. Having images denoting prev/next would be the cleanest. The right side prev topic/next topic might be ok to make sure users know it relates to topics with a different functionality than the left side <<>>. Make sense? Suggestions? Basically this mod will duplicate functionality found stock in most other forums except for smf. +EV

                                                          Ok, here ya go plusev, replace both Display.php and Display.template.php files and you're all set to go.  Didn't use your images Shortie as they were too big, just created 2 9x8 pixel images which fit better IMO.

                                                          Anyways, your free to change the image to whatever you want plusev.

                                                          Going to make a MOD Package and add it to the downloads section here right now.  Very simple edit, but very useful IMO :)

                                                                The files you gave me indicate you are running SMF 2.0 RC1-1 or SMF 2.0 RC 1.2.  Are you sure you are having problems from the files I gave you, as all I did was the simple edits and re-upped with those simple edits.  If you want you can reverse those edits back to the original (and yes, I know you have other MODs that affect Display.php and Display.template.php).

                                                                Also, if you installed MODS after you gave me Display.php and Display.template.php, these MODS could've affected these files and once you overwritten these files, this is why you are getting errors since the MOD(s) that you installed are looking for the code to execute in either Display.php and/or Display.template.php.

                                                                So if you want to uninstall the changes I made to these files, thus uninstalling this altogether...

                                                                HOW TO UNINSTALL MANUALLY

                                                                in Display.php

                                                                Code: [Select]

                                                                    These are the files you need to overwrite on your server in the place where they belong.  If you don't know where these files belong, let me know.  Otherwise, that's all there is to it.

                                                                            I'm kinda paranoid about uninstalling maually. I have edits from both you and shorty and don't want to jack anything up.

                                                                            Could you double check my files that I re-uploaded on friday with the ones you edited for download? Thx

                                                                                Things are back on track and back to work on my forum. Here is a link to the forum after the edits you gave me are installed. After you have a look I'll install the older files and you can see how it was (almost) working. Also notice that besides it not functioning the right side topic prev/next jumps down to the last post of the next topic not the first as is normal. BTW, there is no error message.

                                                                                Thx, +EV
